Tragedy hopefully can become a catalyst

I realize that publishing decisions are made in advance, but the letter in today's (Jan. 10) Gazette from Wendell Carr of Ottumwa, the Dec. 20 letter from Gary Ellis, and others - clearly a minority, but with a volume and venom out of proportion to their numbers - are pretty clear examples of the kind of ill-informed, fear mongering, divisive and dangerous - and completely inaccurate - paranoia that is driving the violence that erupted so predictably in Arizona and elsewhere.
It's nothing new, sadly. The Big Lie has worked before, and it is up to all people of conscience and courage to stand up, point out and oppose this rejection of what the nation is really supposed to be about - making a more perfect union for all, not just a few at the top.
We must all ask ourselves: If we are not opposing it, then how are we, by our silence, enabling it or - and God forgive us - advancing it?
If anything positive can come of this tragic event in Arizona, it may actually be the catalyst for a sincere return to civility, and peaceful discourse to make the nation truly fulfill its dreams and potential.
