A serious need for judicial reform
The Gazette Opinion Staff

A couple goes through a divorce, the judge orders supervised visits for the father. Only this judge orders visits to be at the ex-mother-in-law's home. Who, by the way, put in writing that “she would rather stick a knife in his throat than look at his face!” The story doesn't end there.
This is why we need accountability in our court system. Judges say they don't have enough resources. I say too much tax is wasted on it now.
Another example of the problems: Couple has a pretrial conference ordered by the court. Petitioner shows up and the other side's attorney does not. Petitioner files for sanctions but a Linn County judge does nothing to the attorney because he is an attorney. Now, it's under appeal and costing the taxpayer more money.
We have judges who don't understand the law or how to apply it. People only find out when it's too late. Taxpayers need an independent group that oversees the court system and its cost to taxpayers. The bar and Iowa Supreme Court do nothing.
