Wamac East opener — It’s 1 vs. 2 in Class 3A

Sep. 3, 2014 3:12 pm
SOLON - The first of what figures to a long string of Wamac Conference volleyball showdowns is set for Thursday night. And it's a doozy.
Class 3A top-ranked Solon hosts No. 2 Mount Vernon in the East Division opener for both teams. First serve for the varsity match should be around 7 p.m. at the Solon High School gym.
Both teams are 1-0 after winning cross-divisional matches last week.
Sophomore Wynne Vandersall leads the Mustangs at 4.67 kills per game, followed by Emma Cochrane (4.33). Morgan Melchert posted 33 assists in the Mustangs' opening win over Williamsburg last week.
Solon is led by hitters Jordan Smith (an Eastern Michigan recruit, averaging 4.75 kills per game) and Jordan Runge (4.25). Taylor Nearad averages 9.75 assists per set. The Spartans opened with a four-set triumph over Clear Creek Amana.
