Woodbury-less East finishes off double-OT upset of top-ranked Ankeny

Mar. 10, 2012 12:24 am
DES MOINES - Who says Sioux City East is only Adam Woodbury and four other guys?
Leading by a point, the Black Raiders saw their star center foul out with just under three minutes to go in the second overtime of their Class 4A state tournament semifinal Friday afternoon. But East's “other guys” didn't die, finishing off a 60-56 upset of top-ranked Ankeny.
“I've got a lot of respect for my teammates and a lot of faith (in them),” said Woodbury, the 7-foot-1 center headed to Iowa next season. “They all showed it right there, hitting free throws, making plays and playing good defense.”
East (21-3) draws another unbeaten in Saturday night's 4A championship game in Iowa City West (25-0). Tipoff is approximately 8:05, with the game televised by KCRG-TV9 (Channel 9).
Woodbury scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds Friday, but was on the bench with four fouls as Ankeny built a 45-40 lead early in the fourth quarter.
It was a 45-43 game with six minutes to go, when Ankeny Coach John Petersen decided to try and draw East out of its zone defense, having his team hold the ball near midcourt for approximately three minutes.
That decision backfired. East eventually came after the Hawks and tied the game, sending it to overtime. A Bryan Sumner 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the first overtime put Ankeny up, 51-49, but Woodbury tied it with seven seconds to go on an offensive rebound.
“We were ahead,” Petersen said, when asked about his fourth-quarter strategy. “We felt we had the advantage against their man to man.”
MFL Mar-Mac finishes 4th
Great season, terrible finish.
MFL Mar-Mac got outscored by 15 points in the fourth quarter in a 69-52 loss to Clarinda in Friday afternoon's Class 2A consolation game. The Bulldogs (24-3) came into this tournament as 2A's top seed but ended up dropping their final two games by 17 points each.
“We won a (Upper Iowa) conference title, set a school record for wins,” said MFL Mar-Mac Coach Eric Dettbarn. “It's been a great season.”
Dettbarn's son, Dalton, led MFL Mar-Mac with 15 points Friday. Center Brandon Hertrampf had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Coach Dettbarn won his 300th career game this season. Former MFL star Raef LaFrentz is being inducted into the Iowa High School Boys' Basketball Tournament Hall of Fame Saturday night.
Great season, terrible finish.
“We made history this season, so that's pretty good,” Hertrampf said. “But I hate losing, so I'm not really satisfied. I hate it, can't stand it.”
