The Walk Through -- KF on Weisman: 'Bounced back fast'
Marc Morehouse
Oct. 20, 2012 4:05 pm
Good evening. Afternoon.
I'm going to steal one of your ANF rally towels now.
I'm where I was last night on the HawkeyeReport.com chat with Mark Weisman. I think he's playing, but I'm not sure how much or how durable or what will be asked of him.
The decision was probably made last night around 10 p.m. I've heard he's playing and I've heard he's not playing from different places.
I think he plays, but he won't be 100 percent.
OK, we've got a long way until kickoff. Gotta go snag some towels.
-- So with Weisman, probably not running back stuff. Probably more like fullback stuff. My guess would be in short yardage and goal line situations. I'm not sure about lateral movement and cutting. We are talking about a sprained ankle and running back. So, that's dicey.
-- I didn't really steal any rally towels.
-- Iowa QBs and TEs out on the field. CJ Fiedorowicz got a fresh haircut. CJ Beathard has not. He has a wonderful mane, lucky kid.
-- Jake Rudock is really working it. No, he's not playing tonight.
I think he can work next year. 1) He's had this year to soak in this offense. He's smart, very smart. He'll have it down. 2) He's getting No. 2 reps, which increased by, I think, about 25 to 50 percent after Stanzi/Northwestern/Vandenberg. So, he's getting the offense and then he's going out and running it at least a little bit. Daily.
That said . . . He'll be a first-year starter. Where will Iowa's receivers be? (KMM, Cotton, Hillyer, Smith, Mabin, Wilson, Willies, Mitchell, Harris, Haluska -- Right now, that's not a lot of game experience.) All eyes will be on the QB, because I think the OL and DL might give Iowa a chance to contend in the Legends.
-- Rumor alert: Iowa and Stanford non-conference. Not happening, at least not as far as Iowa's Mark Abbott said. He's an assistant AD who works with scheduling. The Stanford thing is just a rumor.
With some BCS conferences going to nine games, it makes it harder for schools to find other BCS matchups. I asked about getting rid of FCS. That could happen.
Iowa's next schedule opening is 2016.
Iowa AD Gary Barta likes the pro venues and would be open to an Iowa "home" game at Soldier Field and then a return game at a pro venue close to the other school's location.
Anyway, hold off on plane tickets to the Bay area.
-- The only bowl here is the Florida Citrus.
Reps from the Arizona bowl are here, but only because they played host to the Hawkeyes last December when the Arizona bowl was the Insight Bowl.
-- Some RBs are out of the lockerroom. Damon Bullock is in uniform. I'm surprised by that. Doesn't mean he's going to play, but Ferentz mightily downplayed his availability this week.
-- Weisman is in uniform. KF just said on radio he has a shot to play. 'He really bounced back fast."
Jordan Canzeri is also in uniform. Michael Malloy is out there.
-- Bullock is wearing a hand-warmer around his waist, so don't run crazy with that.
-- OK, warmups went Greg Garmon and then Jordan Canzeri as the No. 2. Blythe and Lowery weren't starters, but I think they're in and in soon.
-- Bullock was ruled out for tonight, by sideline radio guy Rob Brooks.
All right, I'll have a post at halftime and postgame. Thanks for reading.
It looks like the helmet!
