Williams, 73, formerly of Memphis, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Baptist Hospital Memphis. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Atoka First United Methodist Church in Atoka, Tenn. Born on April 25, 1936, she was a graduate of Charles City High School (1950-1954) in Charles City, Iowa, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. While at Wartburg, she participated in numerous extracurricular activities including band and publications. Prior to moving to Memphis, she worked at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Upon her arrival in Memphis, she began working at Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis), where she became the longtime (42 years) Assistant to the Director of Alumni at Rhodes. As a student at Wartburg and later as an employee of two different colleges, she commanded a great deal of respect from friends and colleagues. She was a consummate professional at work and a devout mother at home. Upon her retirement from Rhodes, she moved to Atoka and became a member of the Atoka First United Methodist Church, where she was an active participant in the JOY Group.
She leaves her husband, Earnest Williams; two sons, Tim Starck of Germantown and Dr. Thomas Starck of Atoka; one brother, Randy Arhart of Arkansas; and two granddaughters, Camille Wen-Jun Starck and Carmen Le Yuan Starck. The family requests that if memorials are desired that they be made to Rhodes College. Friends may sign an online guest book at www.covingtonfuneralhome.com
