Miller, Merten L. 'Mert'
Merten L. "Mert" MillerMerten L. "Mert" Miller, 79, of Edgewood, died on Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. on Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mike Jackson officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. at the Church on Friday. Interment with Military Rites: Edgewood Cemetery.
Mert was born on March 27, 1930, the son of Earl and Maria (Mertens) Miller. He was born and raised in Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1948. He then attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Mert was drafted to the U.S. Army and honorably served stateside.
On June 15, 1958, Mert was united in marriage to Jayne Smock at the Greeley Methodist Church. Two daughters were born to this union. They made their home in Edgewood where Mert owned Miller Underground Construction.
Mert was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and a 50-year member of the Masons. Mert was very involved in his community. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, helping with numerous projects at Camp Klaus. He was a firefighter for 40-plus years and volunteered many hours to help with the high school sports complex. Mert was always willing to share his opinion or to lend a hand or a shovel.
Survivors include his wife, Jayne of Edgewood; his two daughters, Lisa (David) Kramer of Dyersville, and Julie (John) Zuber of Amana; and five grandchildren, Brandon Kramer, Chelsey Kramer, Robbie Kramer, Seth Lynch and William Zuber.
Mert was preceded in death by his parents.
