He leaves behind his lovely bride of 48 years, Barbara; their son, Scott and his wife, Sarah; their daughter, Shigeno and her husband, Stephen; and their daughter, Sarah. Jay also has 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Jay was born in Omaha on Jan. 1, 1940. He married Barbara in June 1963. He graduated from Hastings College in 1963 and from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1965. In 1969, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served as a chaplain until 1987.
He was the pastor of Hunter Presbyterian Church in Hunter, N.D., from 1965 until 1969. He was also the pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Hastings, Neb., from 1999 until 2002.
Jay worked as a chaplain in the Linn County Correctional Facility and St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after retiring from the Navy.
Jay dedicated his life to the service of others. He was a shining example of Christ's love. He was a dear friend and will be deeply missed but remembered always.
Memorial services will take place on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Hospital chapel in Cedar Rapids and on Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at Journey Christian Church in Wayne, Neb. (no visitation).
I lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to your local community food bank as Jay cared so deeply for those who suffer from hunger.
