Smith, Arlene
Arlene Smith, 90, of Monticello, formerly of Hopkinton, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate at the services. Friends may call after 10 at the church.
Surviving are her son, Steve, and his wife, Karen Smith, Alpharetta, Ga.; a grandson, Steve Jr., and his wife, Pat, and children, Steffen and Erik; two sisters, Charlotte Silkebaken, Belle Plaine, and Mary Ann Van Langen, Longmont, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; a brother, Almer Hage; and a sister, LaVera Johnson.
Arlene Lavonne Hage was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Ellsworth, Iowa, the daughter of Almer and Anna M. Nelson Hage. Arlene graduated from the Jewel, Iowa schools in 1938. Arlene Hage and Donald Smith were married March 27, 1941, in Jewell. The couple operated Smith Sundry Department Store in Hopkinton for 26 years. Donald preceded her in death on April 23, 1983. Arlene had worked at Citizens State Bank in Hopkinton, the Maquoketa Valley Community Schools, Monticello State Bank and Hopkinton Municipal Utilities. Arlene was a long time resident at the Maple Street Condos, enjoying the many activities there.
She had been a member of the Hopkinton Presbyterian Church and many other community clubs.
