Yes, the unmentioned campaign issue is debt

Once again, Cal Thomas started his Oct. 18 column with an interesting headline: 'The unmentioned issue in this campaign - debt” then goes on and on without mentioning it. I mean Donald Trump's personal debts of course, admitted to be $421 million but may actually be close to a billion dollars.

Mr. Thomas ends with a useful caveat, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson on the dangers of debt: 'A man in debt is so far a slave.” One can only ask, to whom is Trump indebted?

Back to Mr. Thomas' column, he points to our national debt of $27 trillion. Whew! Indeed, this deserves attention and he quotes Joni Ernst, who claims her work on the budget and appropriations process reform committee got nowhere beyond window dressing. The ongoing problem with our national debt, according to Thomas, is that 'many Americans believe government owes them money extracted from others.” I believe Thomas is letting the tail wag the dog. As long as 'millionaires” like Donald Trump can get away with paying only $750 in income taxes, that leaves a heavy burden on the rest of us. Sounds to me like Thomas is lumping Trump in with the 'Americans who believe government owes them.”
