'Cedar Rapids' is coming soon to a theater near you
Mike Hlas Dec. 24, 2010 11:36 am
We heard about this over a year ago. Ed Helms ("The Office," "The Hangover") and John C. Reilly ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia") were going to be in a comedy called "Cedar Rapids."
Helms' character is an insurance agent from small-town Wisconsin who comes to Cedar Rapids for a convention and goes nuts in the "big city," or something of the sort. I didn't hear much about it after the casting was announced. I assumed it died on the vine, like many Hollywood projects.
Oh no. It got made. It's coming out in February.
If this movie is any kind of box-office hit, the name "Cedar Rapids" will be uttered repeatedly nationwide. Worldwide, maybe. "Cedar Rapids" will be Googled umpteen times.
The magnitude of this ... it's almost unimaginable. I don't think my fellow Cedar Rapidians are aware of what this could mean. So I, today, appoint myself the ambassador of Cedar Rapids to the rest of the world until further notice. If you need to deal with anyone or anything related to Cedar Rapids, please go through me.
By the way, most of the filming of "Cedar Rapids" was done in the Ann Arbor, Mich., area. But it's not called "Ann Arbor," is it?
Here's a Los Angeles Times blog post about the movie.
And here's the trailer, which you may see as you attend movies this holiday season:
