Sievers, John F.
John F. Sievers, 93 died peacefully Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at the Monticello Nursing Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Anamosa, the Rev. David Ambrosy will officiate. Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, in Anamosa. Internment, following services, will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Anamosa.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; four daughters, Connie (Herb) Carson of Anamosa, Fran Aldershof of Cedar Rapids, JoAnne (Jim) Ricklefs of Monticello, and Linda (Terry) Barger of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Rhonda Osterhaus, Dan Nolan, John Aldershof, Susie VanMetre, Jackie Costello, Jayne Rolfe, Tara Yuza, Josh Barger and Alicia Barger; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Hurt; two brothers, Ed and Gene Sievers; a son-in-law; and a great-great-grandson.
John Francis Sievers was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Mechanicsville, Iowa. He was the son of Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Young) Sievers. John was a 1934 graduate of Martelle High School. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, where he played basketball. John played professional basketball and had the privilege to play against the Harlem Globetrotters.
On June 15, 1938, John and Lucille Elizabeth Fluckiger were united in marriage in Anamosa, Iowa. John valued his family the most in his life. He was proud of all four daughters and the women they have become today. John and Lucille also fostered several children throughout their marriage and many of them still refer to them as “mom and dad.” John was a very proud farmer for more than 30 years. He also spent many years as an entrepreneur and enjoyed buying and selling Real Estate.
John and Lucille spent every winter in their home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Their grandchildren would come to visit and have many fond memories of fishing, playing cards, golfing and laughing with their grandfather. John enriched the lives of his family with the stories he told, the lessons he taught and his smile. He will be remembered for his keen mind, his memory of facts and his avid storytelling. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Anamosa. He was involved with the Knights of Columbus, Rotary, 4-H, Democratic voting committee, Isaac Walton and Farm Bureau Member.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church or Hospice.
