Dentists support water fluoridation
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Mar. 3, 2010 11:52 pm
Bob Russell's Feb. 11 letter asked for support of continued community water fluoridation, and we wish to add our support to this topic. Water fluoridation is a safe, proven and beneficial public health measure that reduces the incidence and severity of tooth decay.
For a thorough summary of the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation, see the Centers for Disease Control Web site: www.cdc.gov/
fluoridation/index.htm
As dental specialists in this community, we see the benefits of fluoridation every day. Unfortunately, we particularly see the devastating effect that a lack of fluoride can have on children and adults. It is a fact: Fluoride protects enamel from demineralization caused by bacteria.
It is important for the community to know that the dentists and dental specialists, as well as local, state and national public health officials support community water fluoridation because it is safe and effective.
I submit this on behalf of Drs. Chad Pfohl, Deborah Zeitler, Polly Iben, Don Peterson, Matt Geneser and Kaaren Vargas.
