Sister Mary Clare Sweeney, BVM, 84, of Mount Carmel, died at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Marian Hall in Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Marian Hall Chapel, Mount Carmel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Marian Hall Chapel, where there will be a prayer service at 11 a.m. Hoffmann Schneider Fu-neral Homes & Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.
Sister Mary Clare received her bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose University, her master's degree from Iowa State University and her Ph.D. from Arizona State University, Tempe.
Sister Mary Clare was an elementary school educator in Rock Island, Berwyn and Chicago, Ill., and Iowa City, Tama and Clinton, Iowa. She served on the faculty of Mun-delein College, Chicago; Arizona State University, Tempe, and Arizona State University East, Mesa.
She was born May 16, 1930, in Dubuque, the daughter of James F. and Mae A. (Kingsley) Sweeney. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on March 19, 1950, and made final profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1955.
Sister Mary Clare is survived by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 66 years; her brothers, John Francis (Diane) Sweeney of Bonita Springs, Fla., Dr. James Arthur (Lois) Sweeney of Bloomington, Minn., and Dr. William Henry (Jackie) Sweeney of Mount Horeb, Wis.; a sister, Anne M. Sweeney of Bernard; and nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to L'Arche U.S.A. Communities, P.O. Box 0278, Clinton, IA 52732, and New Melleray Abbey, 5632 Melleray Circle, Peosta, IA 52068.
