Haines, Donald J.
Donald J. Haines, 94, formerly of Marion, passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at St. Luke's Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Troy Titus, with military honors by American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion. Visitation: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private Family Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Don is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Josephine of Cedar Rapids; one son, Dennis Ray (Elizabeth) Haines of Marion; one granddaughter, Karen Haines (Roger) Bolsinger of Guttenberg; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Quinby and Kayla Bolsinger; and a sister, Bernita Weaver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Howard, Richard, Kenneth and Robert; one sister, Margaret; and an infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Haines.
Don was born Nov. 7, 1916, the son of Fred and Hattie (Carver) Haines in Coggon, Iowa. He graduated from Marion High School in 1936. On Feb. 2, 1942, he was united in marriage with Josephine E. Jones at her parents' home on Blairs Ferry Road. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. After discharge in 1945, he became the auto insurance underwriter for Mutual Fire and Auto Insurance Co. in Cedar Rapids for 30 years. In retirement, Don and Jo enjoyed traveling with their Holiday Rambler RV throughout the U.S. and wintering in Arizona.
