Shaun Beyer shows pop in the long jump

Apr. 11, 2016 10:28 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — Feeling a 'pop' in your legs, for a track athlete, usually isn't a good thing at all.
It is for Shaun Beyer.
'I feel like I'm getting my pop back,' Beyer said Monday after a standout long-jump effort at the Wilkinson Relays boys' meet at Kingston Stadium.
Beyer won both jumping events, Dalles Jacobus and Jackson Coker went 1-2 in both throws and Cedar Rapids Kennedy rang up 64 field-event points on their way to the team championship.
'That's definitely where we get a lot of points,' said Beyer, a University of Iowa football recruit. 'Dalles and Coker score a ton in the throws and I do pretty well in the jumps.'
Kennedy scored 130 points to pace the eight-team field. Iowa City High was second with 102, followed by host Cedar Rapids Washington (90), Cedar Rapids Prairie (80) and Linn-Mar (76).
Beyer has been a steady high-jumper for years, but is still getting his feet wet in the long jump. His best before this season was 19-7.
Monday, he sailed 22-5 1/2, which puts him at No. 3 statewide.
Beyer injured an ankle during basketball season, but is starting to feel like his old, really good, self.
'I can definitely go further,' he said. 'I don't have much technique yet. Coach (Curt Pakkebier) will work on me and make me better.'
Beyer cleared 6-2 in the high jump, and Jacobus — who will join him at Iowa in the fall — added efforts of 54-1 in the shot and 162-7 in the discus. Austin Coates was Kennedy's lone winner on the track, capturing the 400 hurdles in 57.02 seconds.
Monday's meet was a makeup from an earlier postponement, and a lot of teams face a busy week as the cutoff for the Drake Relays approaches.
Cedar Rapids Prairie, for instance, has four meets on its platter in six days. The Hawks will host the Hawkins Relays on Tuesday, go to Ames on Thursday and travel to North Scott on Saturday.
Jalen Rima competed in just two events Monday. He said he'll run four Tuesday, two Thursday and four Saturday.
'Coach (Bill Schwarz) said to treat it like a workout, because we won't be practicing for a while,' Rima said.
Rima anchored the Hawks in a speedy 1,600-meter relay; they won it in 3:25.04, a time that ranks second in the state.
'That's exactly where we wanted to be,' Rima said. 'It's exactly what we wanted.'
Marty Borseth, Matt Lorenz and Tysen VanDraska ran the first three legs.
Rima also anchored Prairie to a win in the 800 relay (1:31.90).
