Sites and sights around the sports world, part I

As part of our many journeys covering sports, we encounter interesting and impromptu moments, whether it's in Iowa City or elsewhere. This week I'm throwing out a few random pictures from the most recent college sports season. Here are six from the past season:

Often we scribes arrive at Kinnick Stadium before dawn in the late fall, especially for 11 a.m. kickoffs. On my way from the press box to The Gazette's weekly segment on WMT's 'Bumper Brigade,' I snapped this photo of the sun rising over the Nile Kinnick statue on Oct. 11, 2014 before the Hawkeyes' homecoming game against Indiana.
Few sports figures are as entertaining as Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads. Usually the only time I usually see him in action is the Monday of Cy-Hawk week. As usual, he did not disappoint on Sept. 8, 2014.
Iowa basketball legend Roy Marble was honored by Iowa officials at the Hawkeyes' home finale at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on March 7, 2015.
Every high school that produced a Super Bowl football player will receive a golden football like this one, which happens to commemorate former Cedar Rapids Regis quarterback Kurt Warner. This football was on display in Chicago's Grant Park during the NFL draft on April 30, 2015.
Northern Iowa alum Kurt Warner cheered and spoke to the Panthers' men's basketball team during the NCAA tournament at Seattle's KeyArena on March 20, 2015. Here, The Gazette columnist Mike Hlas interviews the former Super Bowl and NFL Most Valuable Player in the locker room.
Legendary doesn't begin to describe former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry, who attended the season opener at Kinnick Stadium on Aug. 30, 2014. Fry spoke with reporters off the cuff before the game, sharing stories that always generated laughter. That certainly was the case here with Fry and The Gazette's Mike Hlas.
