Johnson, Louis 'Louie' Glen
Louis “Louie” Glen Johnson, 75, of Cedar Rapids, passed away May 13, 2010, after a short illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Kenwood Park United Methodist Church. Burial, with military honors: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.
Louie is survived by his sons, Allan (Jan) Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Thomas (Kathleen) Johnson of Kirksville, Mo.; four grandchildren, Nicole (Josh) Grissom, Michelle, Rebecca and Andrew Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Dillion, Calvin and Jacob Grissom; and a sister, Joan (Craig) Detmer of Spokane, Wash.
Louie was born Dec. 20, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, to Glen and Mildred (Smola) Johnson. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1953 and married Beverly Grafton on Dec. 18, 1955. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Louie enlisted in the Navy in 1954, serving four years on active duty and 24 years on reserve duty. He retired in 1982 as a chief petty officer.
Louie worked as an electrician and was a member of IBEW No. 405 for 50 years. He was also a member of Hanford American Legion Post 5 and Salem United Methodist Church. He recently worked as a volunteer with the “Old Farts” Electricians, fixing up flood-damaged homes in Cedar Rapids. Starting in the early 1960s, he could be seen climbing the light poles at the old Veterans Memorial Baseball Park, maintaining and fixing the lights. He also worked part time as a security guard for Two Star Detective Agency at many University of Iowa sporting events.
Military honors by Hanford American Legion Post 5.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “Old Farts” Electricians.
