Hurn, Pete Lute
Pete Lute Hurn, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke's Hospital Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Northbrook Baptist Church by the Rev. Darin Ulmer of Community Baptist Church. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Theda; children, Michael (Linda) Hurn of Elburn, Ill., Thomas (Lisa) Hurn and Derenda Hurn, all of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Mazie Lou (Bud) Wheeler of Pocahontas, Ark., Minnie Sue Green of Springfield, Mo., and Clara Bell Bass of Troy, Mo.; grandchildren, Matthew, Andrea, Lissa, Courtney, Corey, Andrew, Lucas, Jarrod and Will; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine; and a brother, Moody.
He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Pocahontas, Ark., to Tive and Clara Hurn. He married Theda Hogan there on Sept. 18, 1948. Pete was madly in love with his wife of 63 years. Mr. Hurn started his career at the Pocahontas Star Herald at the age of 18. He moved to Iowa in 1955 and worked at Lily Printing. He retired from Superior Press in 1992 as a pressman. He was a very devout Christian man. A member of Community Baptist Church in Marion. He and Theda were part of the core group that helped plant four Baptist churches in Iowa. Through the years, Pete teamed with his wife, Theda and hosted in-home Bible studies and served together faithfully in their church.
Pete loved watching baseball, camping and traveling with his family. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren.
Pete was an involved member of the GCIU (printer pressman union)
