C. EUGENE "NEWT" FIFIELD

C. Eugene "Newt" Fifield, 97, a resident of Hallmar Residential Care, died there Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015. Per Newt's request, there will be no visitation or service. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum Columbarium. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy; a daughter, Valerie (John) Hogan of West Dundee, Ill.; one granddaughter, Mya Rose Hogan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Newt was born on April 26, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Clarence and Bess Farrell Fifield. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the Army during World War II for over four years in the Pacific theater, as well as being a part of the occupation force in Japan
Newt graduated from the University of Iowa and later received his master's degree from the University of Kansas. He married Dorothy Oppegard on Aug. 28, 1948, in Chicago.
He was a social studies teacher at Franklin High School, later at Washington High School and retired from teaching after more than 35 years of service. He was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and traveled extensively with his family both in the United States and the world.
Newt was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
