CYRUS CHRISTENSON
Cedar Rapids
Cyrus Orion Christenson, 100, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 29, at 11:30 a.m., with visitation one hour before the service at the church.
Cy was born May 27, 1916, in Roland, Iowa, to Andrew and Amanda (Olson) Christenson. He left home at
a young age to find his own way and made his living playing piano for a time, something he did on the side for most of his life at many Cedar Rapids venues.
On June 30, 1942, Cy married Jeanne Charlotte DePoy at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and was soon called to serve his country in World War II. He served with honor in the Army Air Corps, and upon his return from Europe attended Bradley University, where he learned the art of watchmaking. He worked at Boyson Jewelry for a number of years, then began a long and varied career in sales. Eventually, he returned to watchmaking at Siegel's Jewelry, where he stayed for 30 years until the flood of 2008 convinced him it was time to retire at the age of 92.
A man of devout faith in Jesus Christ, Cy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy of faith will live on in his "unbroken circle" his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Cy is survived by his wife of almost 75 years; children, Dennis (Sharon) Christenson, Paul Christenson, Teresa (Gary) Smith, Mary (Mitch) Ruffcorn, Kevin (Rachel) Christenson and Colin Christenson; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlet Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made in Cy's name to Catholic Relief Services.
