World news: Drew Tate out, no medal for Aaron White

Jul. 12, 2013 11:08 am
Football is a collision sport.
Former Iowa quarterback Drew Tate had been starting to make a name for himself in the Canadian Football League. But after earning the starting job with the Calgary Stampeders, he spent most of last season sidelined by injury.
Tate started the first two games of this season, but is out tonight for Calgary's game at Montreal because of elbow problems.
“I can't swim, I can't lift anything, I can't throw, I can't do anything,” Tate said. “I ride my bike to keep my legs strong, go for walks, but it's all I can do. They told me not to do anything. I'm sure they don't like my flipping balls around, but I have to do something; I can't stand around doing nothing. It sucks.”
Montreal, by the way, is where Erik Campbell landed after getting let go as Iowa's wide receivers coach after last season.
Meanwhile, the U.S. was eliminated from medal-contention in World University Games men's basketball play Friday when it lost to Canada, 94-85. The Americans had fallen to Australia the previous day, and are 3-2 in the event.
Iowa's Aaron White got off to a great start in the Games with a 16-point opener against United Arab Emirates, but totalled just eight points in the next four games. He didn't score in nine minutes against Canada. Here are the U.S. statistics.
However, Iowa State forward Melvin Ejim continues to give Canada (5-0) solid play. He had eight points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes against the Americans, and is averaging 18.6 minutes, 7.2 points and 5.4 rebounds.
Canada starts medal-round play Sunday. The U.S. will continue to play in the event, but ninth-place is the highest it can attain in the 24-team standings.
