Reject violence on this Father’s Day
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 16, 2012 11:47 am
Join me, and the Iowa Men's Action Network, in speaking out against domestic and sexual violence. Reject the assumption that boys must be taught that strength is demonstrated through violence, and move toward a day where men everywhere lead with conviction. This Father's Day, let us say “No More.”
Join me in signing this pledge:
“Before you sit down to enjoy Father's Day, stand up for what it means. Violence against women and children is a harsh reality in our communities and neighborhoods. We want a community where boys are taught that violence does not equal strength and where men stand with courage, lead with conviction, and speak with one voice to say, ‘No More.'”
I choose this Father's Day to take the pledge because of my own grandfather. He taught me that gentleness is strength. Without him, I would not be the man I am today.
I choose to take this pledge this Father's Day for my daughter and my sons, whom I want to grow up in an environment free of violence. I dream of the amazing lives they could live if they never had to worry about being victimized or privileged by domestic or sexual violence.
This Father's Day, join me in taking the pledge for your mother, daughter, sister, brother, yourself and your community. Safety doesn't just happen; we have to work for it. It can begin today, with you and me.
Please visit the Iowa Men's Action Network website and take the pledge at www.icadv.org/iowaman/Fathers
