Mid-Prairie's Miller taking Hawkeye FB visit

Jan. 30, 2010 6:02 pm
Give it up for Tanner Miller.
The terrific all-around athlete is taking an official football visit this weekend to the University of Iowa. But he interrupted that visit to play in Mid-Prairie's 57-48 basketball victory over Iowa City Regina during Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.
"I had my official visit this morning. They gave me tours and everything. I'm going back there now to hang with one of the players," Miller said. "But I couldn't miss this game. They probably would have understood if I would have stayed (in Iowa City) the whole time, but I needed to be with my team."
Miller, M-P's leading scorer, is committed to the University of Northern Iowa as a safety. He rushed for 1,846 yards and 23 touchdowns this past season and was the Golden Hawks' second-leading tackler.
"I do plan on signing there Wednesday, if everything goes as planned," Miller said. "That's kind of the plan right now."
But ...
"Iowa wants me as a preferred walk-on," Miller said. "They're kind of full up on scholarships right now. They want me as a walk-on, they think I have a pretty good upside. I'd have a chance to get a scholarship later on."
Or perhaps get one this year if one of Iowa's commitments falls through at the last second.
"I'm just looking at things," Miller said. "I don't know. It's always been my dream to play Division I ball. I'm just seeing what (Iowa) has to say. You never know."
