Richard Cornwell, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 3, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Services will be held on Monday, Feb. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at First Assembly of God, with Pastor Rick Gail officiating. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Richard Hamilton Cornwell was born Jan. 6, 1922, to Ray and Carrie Hamilton Cornwell in Iowa City. He enlisted in the Army Ordinance during World War II. He was sent to England's Ordinance Depot and was in the invasion of France in Normandy. He was transferred to the 95th Division Co. “E” and went through the Battle of the Bulge. Richard went through France and Germany and mustered out in 1945. He was united in marriage to Doris Staub on Jan. 10, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death in 1995.

He loved reading and getting lost in a bookstore. After working for HK Staub & Sons Construction, he went into the refrigeration and air conditioning business. He loved woodworking and had many different wood projects.

He is survived by his children, Mary Wiyrick and Kenneth (Vicki) Cornwell, both of Cedar Rapids, Lois (Max Martinez) Vent of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Joanne (Earl) Gosselin of Elbert, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
