Soukup, Mary J.
Mary J. Soukup, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, with a vigil beginning at 4 p.m. Burial: 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg.
Survivors include her son, Roger (Cathy) Soukup of Cedar Rapids; and four grandchildren, Rich of Ankeny, Julie of Norwalk, Amy of Astoria, N.Y., and Kristin of South Bend, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy in 1993.
Mary was born March 20, 1919, in Prairieburg, Iowa, the daughter of Wes and Francis (Lawrence) Holub. On April 24, 1956, she was united in marriage to Rudolph Soukup in Prairieburg. Mary was a homemaker and worked in the Anamosa school system for 16 years. She and Rudy lived on the family farm until moving to Anamosa for about 20 years. They then moved to Marion in 1983 where she lived until 2007, when she moved to Evergreen Estates II. She remained there until a month ago when she moved to Northbrook Manor.
Mary loved to bake kolaches and share them with all her family and friends. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, and especially enjoyed all of her visits with friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous, 12007 190th St., Monticello, IA 52310 or Hospice of Mercy, 701 10th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Evergreen Estates II, Northbrook Manor, and Hospice of Mercy for their care of Mary.
