Shimek, Carolyn B.
Carolyn B. Shimek, 98, died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Cottage Grove Place following a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel.
Carolyn was born May 21, 1913, in Solon, the daughter of Joseph and Tillie (Meka) Koss. She married Frank Shimek on May 20, 1941. She was employed by Margaret and Howard Hall and enjoyed working for them for many years at Brucemore. She enjoyed traveling with Frank, especially to Florida and Las Vegas before his death in 1983.
Carolyn enjoyed baking, gardening, and her flowers.
She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Carolyn is survived by a sister-in-law, Louise Kalous; nieces and nephews, Mary (Robert) Jehle, Margaret Novy, James (Linda) Koss, Donald (Sheri) Koss, Nancy (Mark) Heathman, Bonnie Lacina, Mary (Dallas) Cooling, Joyce (Lyle) Cooling, Delores (Garry) Kuch, Shirl (Jake) Jacobsen and Lewis Koss.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Henry, Otto and Edward Koss; two sisters, Mary Sovers and Emma Greazel; and two nieces.
Memorials may be directed to the local VFW or a charity of donor's choice in Carolyn's name.
The family would like to express a thank you to the nursing staff, nurses and doctors at Cottage Grove Health Center.
