Letter: Uphold peaceful transition of power

For centuries the only way for one leader to take over from another was by the use of power and warfare.
One of the things the United States has been admired for is its democratic process and the peaceful transition of power. The founders of our country understood the terrors of war and the disruption and loss of life that occurred whenever one power forcefully took over from another. The election process allowing all of the adult citizens to partake in the selection of our leaders is something that is admired by people all over the world.
Freedom of speech sometimes makes the process messy and upsetting when our first choice isn't the choice of the majority, but we need to remember the value of a government controlled by citizens through the election process. We need to elect people who uphold the balance of power between the executive, legislative and judicial branches laid out in the Constitution. We are lucky we are to have a voice in our government and need to continue to uphold the peaceful transition of power because the alternative is horrific.
