Letter: Keep Jones and daylight saving time

As a 60 year Cedar Rapidian and longtime golfer I would like to give my two cents on a couple of prominent issues of the day - the closing of Jones Golf Course and daylight saving Time.

Losing a local golf course would be a shame. But spending thousands and thousands of dollars every few years to rebuild the Jones course after flooding issues is a waste of city and ultimately taxpayer money. Many golfers love the Jones course and a compromise of keeping Jones open as a 9-hole course seems to be a great alternative to closing and would help solve both issues.

And in a time when many Midwest public golf courses are struggling to stay financially viable, daylight saving time is must. Extending daylight hours allows working people the opportunity to get out after work during the week and enjoy a pastime that does take a large chunk of time. I'm pretty sure eliminating daylight saving time would decrease the number of rounds played each season on Cedar Rapids and other public courses, further increasing the financial strain to keep courses open. And I am sure there are other recreation and business entities that get a lift from instituting daylight saving time each year.

As for me here in Cedar Rapids, I am a proponent of keeping Jones open as a 9-hole course and maintaining the daylight saving time system.
