IOWA CITY - No. 8-ranked Iowa City West fell last night to unranked Davenport West, 7-1, in the Class 5A regional semifinal.
The Falcons managed six runs in the first four innings off the bats of pitcher Lexy Monty and Rachel Stewart, who finished their nights 3-for-4 and 4-for-4, respectively. Head coach Steve Saladino said his team simply outplayed Iowa City West.
'We're a very young team, we only have one senior,” Saladino said. 'We either beat people big or they beat us big. We just did all the right things tonight.”
Saladino said making it into the regional final will be a new and exciting time for his girls.
'This is a new experience for them,” Saladino. 'It wasn't anything magical, everybody just did what they were supposed to do.”
Heading into the Class 5A regional final, Saladino said there might be a little bit of revenge in the making.
'Last year, they were done by 18 runs to [Pleasant Valley] last year,” Saladino said. 'And we talked about that and kept the article about that and now we'll try to finish better.”
Freshman Rachel Stewart helped the Flacons to the offensive victory. She ended her night 4-for-4.
Davenport West plays Pleasant Valley in the final regional game tonight at Bettendorf High School.
