Rivalry Saturday: CPU upends Marion in OT
Jeff Linder Jan. 21, 2012 3:25 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Center Point-Urbana almost lost the game at the free throw line in regulation.
The Stormin' Pointers won it there in overtime.
CPU drained 8 of its first 9 free throws in the extra session and upended Class 3A 12th-ranked Marion, 57-51, in a Wamac Conference West Division girls' basketball game at Rivalry Saturday at Washington High School.
"We missed some shots, we missed some layups, but we pushed through it," said CPU's Jessica Wooldridge, who scored six points in overtime -- all on free throws. "We knew we wanted it more, and it it worked out at the end."
CPU (8-5 overall, 5-3 Wamac West) took a 43-42 lead on Shannon Stone's basket with 5:40 left in regulation. The Stormin' Pointers, who had been golden at the line up to that point, missed 6 of 8 from the stripe and didn't make another field goal in regulation.
Somehow, they survived.
Dani Peyton's free throw got Marion (10-4, 7-2) even at 45-45 with 45 seconds left. The Indians had a chance to win, but Peyton was called for a charge before releasing a shot, which went in at the buzzer.
Overtime, then, belonged to CPU.
"I feel we got out-hustled," said Marion Coach Brian O'Donnell. "We didn't make the plays you need to make to win. They outplayed us and made plays when they needed."
CPU enjoyed a 25-8 advantage at the line.
Haley Gauley made five 3-pointers and led CPU with 15 points. Madie Wilkin scored 12, Wooldridge 10.
Peyton led all scorers with 18.
