U.S. badly needs political vigilance
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 21, 2009 12:31 am
We keep asking ourselves “why can't we just be Americans?” Dishonoring the office of the presidency by shouting “liar,” cheering when we failed to get the 2016 Olympics because it's a win for the opposing political party, politics equals money. How do we take our country back? We e-mail and write our legislators and get form letters in response, snotty answers to our phone inquiries. What can we do?
War is old men sitting in their Washington offices deciding how our young men and women will fight and die. Iraq was unnecessary. “Our oil is under their sand” was the motive and Osama bin Laden is still on the loose.
We've come close to ruining our country and our biggest fight now is how to take care of our citizens' health without spending too much money. What price do we put on our health?
How are we going to pay for all this? Well, how are we going to pay for Iraq? The November Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) saw no checks and balances; 73 executives were paid millions in bonuses with our taxpayer bucks.
Write, call, discuss, educate and beg our youth to be politically vigilant. As baby boomers, we thought we'd leave this country in a better place. Some have really crapped it up.
