5A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie 70, 5A No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington 56
Sarah Schmitt said the message was simple before Friday night's game with Cedar Rapids Washington.
'(Coach Josh) Bentley told us this was a business trip,' the Cedar Rapids Prairie senior guard said. 'I thought we really did a good job taking care of business.'
After starting 1-2, both losses coming in the last second to ranked foes Marion and Iowa City West, the Class 5A No. 8 Hawks finally closed the deal against a ranked foe. They broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to down No. 7 and previously unbeaten Washington 70-56 in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington High School.
5A No. 1 Iowa City High 61, 4A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 60
After a close call with a short-handed Cedar Rapids Xavier squad, there will be plenty to work on before play resumes in two weeks for undefeated City High.
'We caused some turnovers and that was probably the difference,' City High Coach Bill McTaggart said. 'But our shot selection and ball movement was the worst it has been all year. Give credit to Xavier. We finally started to move the ball and when we move the ball, we get better shots. … We didn't make them play much defense.'
City High (8-0) led by as many as 11 points at 30-19 early in the second quarter, but the Saints — playing without leading scorer Caitlynn Daniels (illness) — clawed back to within a point by halftime at 37-36.
2A No. 7 Bellevue 52, Iowa City Regina 42
The Regals hung around, but couldn't put together a run to upset Bellevue Friday night in Iowa City.
Sam Greving led Regina (4-5) with 14 points. Elly Gahan added 10 points.
Giana Michels led Bellevue (11-0) with 21 points. Lindsey Banowetz added 16 points.

4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie 79, Cedar Rapids Washington 65
There are 16 teams now in the Mississippi Valley Conference. As we head to the holiday break, only one has not suffered a conference loss.
You're the winner if you predicted Cedar Rapids Prairie to be the big winner. The Hawks (6-1, 5-0) are your lone MVC unbeaten heading to 2019 after they eased past Cedar Rapids Washington 79-65 Friday night on the far southwest side of town.
'No, I wouldn't have been shocked to hear that at the beginning of the season, except maybe that we're the only ones,' said Prairie Coach Jeremy Rickertsen. 'I knew we had the potential to win some games.'
3A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Xavier 59, Iowa City High 50 (OT)
Xavier outscored City High 11-2 in overtime.
Jake Beckmann had 16 points to lead Xavier (4-3) at home.
