The Higher Education Connection, a consortium comprised of local economic development professionals and career services centers from the University of Iowa, Coe College, Cornell College, Mt. Mercy University and Kaplan University, are hosting a panel presentation for area employers about establishing internship programs on Thursday, April 19, from 7:45 to 9 a.m. at the Clark Alumni House on the Coe College campus.
This free event includes a panel of local employers discussing internships within local business, interstate commerce and non-profit agencies.
Additionally, a reference guide will be provided to all attendees, walking employers step-by-step through developing an internship program.
According to DaLayne Williamson, Workforce Business Services Director for ICAD Group, this region has an immediate and future need for connecting students to careers.
“In reviewing this year's Skills 2014 report, employers are projecting more than 11,000 new and replacement workers will be needed in the coming years,” said Williamson. “Internships introduce students to career pathways here in Iowa's Creative Corridor.”
DeMaris McKee, programs specialist with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance said presentations like this are extremely helpful for business representatives trying to learn about internship programs.
“Many companies that don't have internship programs are looking for a starting point,” said McKee. “This panel will discuss how to create programs that will be beneficial to students and businesses.”
Space is limited and registration is available now through the Coe College Career Services office at (319) 399-8844 or via e-mail to Michelle McIllece at
mmcillec@coe.edu. Registration deadline is Friday, April 13.
