Cedar Rapids police release name of man injured while in custody

The man who injured himself in the back of a Cedar Rapids police squad car remained hospitalized Tuesday as state investigators continue to work the case.
Paul R. Saldivar, 33, of 1036 11th St. NE, was arrested Thursday evening after police said he caused problems at a downtown Cedar Rapids bar. Police said Saldivar was verbally agitated and became combative after was caught following a foot chase.
According to police, Saldivar hit his head against the arm rest while being handcuffed and continued to kick and be combative while en route to jail. Just before arriving at the jail, Salvidar became quiet, and when the officers arrived, they realized Saldivar was unconscious.
Officers began CPR and an ambulance was called. Saldivar was taken to Mercy Medical Center.
Cedar Rapids police released Saldivar's name Tuesday and said he remains hospitalized. Police said he was in the intensive care unit Friday. No other details about his current condition were immediately available.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was contacted and continues to investigate the case.
Saldivar has a lengthy criminal history, including felony convictions for extortion, burglary and drug possession, according to online court records.
