Cyclones' Elliott reportedly headed to Notre Dame
Jan. 18, 2012 9:50 am
According to multiple sources, the Iowa State football team has lost its second assistant coach in less than two months.
The Chicago Tribune, among other media outlets, is reporting Cyclones secondary coach Bobby Elliott has left the program to join Brian Kelly's staff at Notre Dame.
Early last month, former ISU offensive coordinator Tom Herman accepted the same position with Ohio State, as well as the quarterbacks coaching job.
Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads filled that void by promoting then-wide receivers and special teams coach Courtney Messingham.
According to the Tribune, Rhoads made a statement regarding Elliott's departure:
“Bobby has informed me that he is leaving our program for a coaching position at Notre Dame," Rhoads said, according to the Tribune. "We appreciate his contributions to our program and wish the Elliott family all the best in the future."
Elliott - who played football at Iowa and is the son of former Hawkeyes coach and athletics director Bump Elliott - could not be reached for comment.
Neither Notre Dame nor Iowa State had issued a news release as of 1 p.m. today (Wednesday).
Elliott has served under three ISU head coaches: Donnie Duncan (1981-82); Dan McCarney (2000-01); and Rhoads (2010-present).
The Cyclones now have two assistant coaching vacancies - wide receivers and secondary.
