Lt. Col. David George Reynolds, USA-Retired, Ph.D., departed this life on March 5, 2017, at the age of 83. Dr. Reynolds died at Atria Senior Living Center in Lakewood, Colo., in the presence of his family. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where there will be a time of visitation from 4 p.m. until services. Born Nov. 25, 1933, he earned a B.A. from Knox College, an M.S. from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Iowa. Dr. Reynolds was a career military officer who served as a research physiologist in the U.S. Army until 1977. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he held director of surgical research positions at the University of Iowa, the University of South Florida and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Reynolds also served as president of the International Shock Society from 1986 to 1987. A pioneer in the field of shock and trauma research, his work resulted in many advances in modern battlefield medicine as well as existing medical and surgical care.
Dr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Louise Reynolds; his brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Dolores Reynolds; an infant son; an infant grandson; and by his beloved wife, Julia M. Davis.
He is survived by two sons, Stephen Reynolds and wife Sarah of Golden, Colo., and Douglas Reynolds and wife Judy of Arlington, Va.; three stepchildren, Anne Suter and husband Tom of Iowa City, Paul Davis and wife Linda of Belleville, Ill., and Mark Davis and Linda Kraus of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nephew, Scott Reynolds and husband Klate Reimer of Kansas City, Mo.; and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dr. Reynolds will be greatly missed by his family and friends, who loved him dearly, as well as by the men and women of the armed forces, and all whose lives have been saved and enhanced by the contributions to modern medicine derived from his body of research.
