Marie T. Poggenpohl, 87, of rural Tiffin, Iowa, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, on the family farm surrounded by her son, Steve, and neighbor, Patricia Koffron. She died from a long illness since Oct. 12, 2017, of a brain bleed and blood clots of the brain.
Marie T. Klein was born Aug. 5, 1930, on the family farm southwest of Tiffin, the daughter of Anthony and Mayme (Rohret) Klein. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1948. She started working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Iowa City at the age of 16, beginning a career that spanned over 40 years as a long-distance and information operator.
She met her future husband, Robert "Bob" Poggenpohl, at an Iowa Hawkeyes basketball game and later married in December of 1950.
Marie is survived by her son, Steve Poggenpohl; grandchildren, David Poggenpohl and Lisa Poggenpohl; daughter-in-law, Jenny Poggenpohl; and a large number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob, in 2011; daughter, Lori Poggenpohl; son, Greg Poggenpohl; stepson, Tom Poggenpohl; sisters, Evelyn Anderson of Sacramento, Calif., Rita Sobczynski of Detroit, Mich., and Margaret Ware of Riverside, Iowa; her brother, Bob Klein of Riverside, Iowa; nephews, Sam Ware, Roman Sobczynski and Rick Klein; niece, Barbara Ware; and all her brothers-in-law and sisters-in law.
Marie's wishes are that no public funeral services or visitation would be held. Cremation services provided by Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service.
