Ann was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Monticello, the first of 10 children born to Glenn H. and Eloise (Hallauer) Orcutt. She graduated from Monticello High School in 1934 and Browns Business College of Davenport in 1936. She served as billing clerk for Cass Transfer Co. before becoming bookkeeper at the Monticello Ford garage. In her earlier years she was also the social news reporter for the Monticello Express newspaper.
Ann was married to Everett J. Mayberry on Oct. 15, 1938. They took up farming on the Mayberry homestead in Anamosa and she soon became a farmer's wife with all the duties that entails. In addition to the dairy cows and pigs they raised on their farm, she and Everett started a business which supplied eggs to many institutions, grocery stores, and individuals in the community. Ann became known as “The Egg Lady” to many who knew her.
After raising her children, she worked for the Iowa State University Extension Service as a nutrition educator and truly enjoyed helping so many people. Ann loved her many years of life, keeping active and leading several community organizations, which included Bluebirds, Campfire, 4-H, Farm Bureau, Ophilian Club, Cass Homemakers, and the Republican Party. She and Everett were great Hawkeye fans and attended football games for over 40 years.
Ann is survived by three daughters, Sharon Duncan, Dover, Del., Jann (Brent) Ruben, Princeton, N.J., and Tracy (Mark) Zimmerman, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Harter, Davenport, and Zelda (Vic) Clark, Davenport; brother, Jack (Helen) Orcutt, Blue Grass; two sisters-in-law, Marguerite Orcutt, Monticello, and Beverly Orcutt, Davenport; and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by Everett in 2004 after 66 wonderful years together. Also her parents; three brothers, Tommy (infant), Don and Glenn Jr.; three sisters and their husbands, Joyce (Larry) Squire, Hope (Bill) Whisler and Georgia Mae (Lester) Erps; grandson, Bryce Duncan; and a number of cousins.
Ann's family wishes to thank all the many wonderful friends, doctors, nurses, and other helpers who have always been so kind in providing care to her. A very special thanks to Dr. Todd Langager, her cardiologist, family friend and health counselor for many years. His thoughtful guidance and concern provided support for the entire family throughout her final days.
