Back to football.
In less than two weeks, Iowa (7-5) will be facing Missouri (10-2) in the Insight Bowl, a 9 p.m. kickoff Iowa time.
The Hawkeyes are a dropped pass at Indiana from 6-6. They haven't played a complete football game since Oct. 30, when they thrashed then-No. 5 Michigan State 37-6.
The flipside, Iowa is 18 points from undefeated. The 34-27 loss at Arizona remains the Hawkeyes' worst this season. Everything else came down to the wire. Yes, Iowa crumbled, losing all five games in the fourth quarter, but this team isn't that far off from a solid 8-4 or a terrific 9-3 or an outstanding 10-2.
Doesn't seem to be any middle ground for the 2010 Hawkeyes. It's literally a pass-fail deal for this team.
The Insight Bowl, which has gone up in status with the Big Ten since last season, gives Iowa a chance for a measure of redemption in 2010 and a kickstart for 2011.
Some important pieces will be missing. Can't ignore that fact.
Wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was arrested on drug charges last week and is gone. This is significant, no mitigating his loss. Johnson-Koulianos is Iowa's career receptions and receiving yardage leader. That's a career thing, but he was one of Iowa's most explosive playmakers in '10, catching 10 TD passes and returning a kick 88 yards for a TD in the finale against Minnesota.
In the depth chart released Tuesday, senior Colin Sandeman is listed as Johnson-Koulianos' replacement. He missed the Northwestern game while suffering through foot and ankle sprains and turf toe. He has 17 catches for 183 yards and two TDs. His high for receptions and yardage this season came against Eastern Illinois with four for 59 yards. He had a terrific Orange Bowl with four for 53 yards and a TD.
Don Nordmann, a 6-foot-6 senior, is listed as Sandeman's backup.
Could sophomore Keenan Davis push ahead here?
It's possible. In the Orange Bowl last season, Johnson-Koulianos and Marvin McNutt, Iowa's best receiving duo, started together for the first time when Johnson-Koulianos switched to make that happen. This season, Johnson-Koulianos and McNutt started opposite each other for 10 games. They were Iowa's Nos. 1 and 2 receivers, with McNutt's 51 catches leading the way.
Davis has 10 catches for 126 yards and a TD this season. The only stretch where was depended on this year was Ball State, when he entered the game for McNutt, who left with a minor injury. This entire season, Davis, a 6-3, 215-pounder, has been McNutt's backup all season. It's a different position than the Johnson-Koulianos spot, but there is precedent for a flip.
Then at running back, sophomore Adam Robinson has been suspended for the Insight Bowl for an undisclosed reason. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz pointed out during Tuesday's news conference that Robinson had been suspended because of academics earlier this season. He also said players' status undergoes several measures.
"Big part of coaching, big thing we try to do is try to shape behaviors and sometimes try to change behaviors," Ferentz said. "Every student-athlete that comes here comes from a different background typically. We have over 115 players on our roster typically. It's a wide slice of society when we put a team together.
"Players come with all kinds of backgrounds, habits academically, football-wise, socially. We certainly have expectations in our program. And basically it's a process of the player adhering to what we look for and coming our way or not. That's a player's choice; sometimes it's a coach's choice. In both of those instances, I think that's really what we're looking at. That's about it right there."
So, Robinson is out. He's been Iowa's leading rusher the last two seasons. He led Iowa with 941 yards and 10 TDs this season.
That leaves freshman Marcus Coker, who's rushed for 403 yards and one TD in six games. He's a true freshman and his performance has reflected the range of what you might expect from a true frosh. He rushed for 129 yards against Indiana. He rushed for 70 yards and a TD against Ohio State on just nine carries. He fumbled during Iowa's last gasp at Minnesota.
Most every important piece is still here.
Quarterback Ricky Stanzi has had a sterling season on the stat sheet with 25 TDs and only four interceptions and a 64.8 completion percentage. Defensive end Adrian Clayborn and Iowa's D-line is healthy. The secondary should be healthy.
The linebacker corps, crushed by injury this season, might get a boost if senior Jeff Tarpinian is able to return from the neck/shoulder stinger that has limited him for eight weeks.
The Hawkeyes haven't shown up since Oct. 30, at least they haven't had a complete sort of engaged, team effort. But they're still here, if that makes sense.
There's talent on this team. There should be a ton of motivation. They need to find it, whatever it is.
Iowa's Colin Sandeman (22) pulls in a 15 yard completion in front of Iowa State's James Smith (2) and Allen Bell (12) during the fourth quarter of their game Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
