McIntyre, Donald E.
Donald E. McIntyre, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Nov. 23, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following an extended illness. Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in the Mount Moriah section. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Surviving are his children, Deborah Avis, Jolene (Tom) Birkicht and Russell McIntyre, all of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Trent (Lori) Avis, Trevor Avis, Troy (Tammy) Avis, Holly (Casey) Franks and Hilary (Eric) Schmidt; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Chester and Jackie (Ron) Floerchinger, both of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Richard (Grace) McIntyre of Arizona; as well as several nieces and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents; and his grandson, Joshua.
Don was born April 3, 1930, in Nebraska City, Neb., the son of Elmer H. and Thelma K. McIntyre. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids and then enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country honorably during the Korean War. On Aug. 6, 1950, Don was united in marriage to Betty J. Nielson. Betty preceded him in death in 1998.
He was a lifelong member of the Teamsters and had various jobs during his career. He retired in 1985 with his last job at Hometown Dairies.
He enjoyed Little League Baseball where he served as an umpire and was a member of the Cedar Hills Booster Club. Don also played slow-pitch softball. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs.
Memorial donations in Don's honor may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
