Highly, Lee E.
Lee E. Highly, 91, of Maquoketa, died Saturday evening, Nov. 23, 2013, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa following an extended illness. Friends and family may gather in remembrance of Lee on Friday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon in “The Bistro” at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Public graveside military honors and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery.
Lee Edward Highly was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Rochester, Iowa, to Albert Boise and Viva Maude (Finefield) Highly. He was a graduate of Tipton High School and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the South Pacific as a heavy artillery crewman receiving his honorable discharge on Oct. 31, 1945. After the war, he became a private pilot and enjoyed Harley Davidson riding. He married Arlene J. Siders on Jan. 1, 1950, in Tipton. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2002.
After his marriage to Arlene, they moved to Kansas City, Mo., where Lee graduated from watchmaking school. They then moved to Maquoketa, where he worked for Max Ray Jewelers and Clinton Engines. He retired in 1988 after working for 24 years as a custodian for the Maquoketa Community School District.
Lee was a member of the Tipton American Legion Post 123. He enjoyed hunting and sports of all kinds. He was an avid golfer and had been a former member of the Maquoketa Country Club.
Those left to honor Lee's memory include his children, Tim (Connie) Highly of Pflugerville, Texas, Tom (Nancy) Highly of Moline, Ill., and Deb (Bernie) Burmeister of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jason, Trent, Jessica, Bret and Amber; two stepgrandchildren, Cory and Joe; eight great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Alyssa, Zachary, Samara, Isaiah, Quentin, Deagan and Nadia; a sister-in-law, Ruth Chelf of West Liberty; a niece and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Louella.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Hospice of Jackson County or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
