Reichenauer, John J.
John J. Reichenauer, 98, of Monticello, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center after a brief illness. Friends may call from 3 until 7 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Monticello Drill Team and Mount Vernon American Legion Post 480. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Birch.
John was born Sept. 14, 1911, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Andrew and Veronica Stritzel Reichenauer. He married Esther Recker on Sept. 27, 1949, in St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville, and celebrated 60 years of marriage in September. When John was a young man he farmed with his parents and worked as a welder in the shipyards at Dubuque. He was called to the Army, serving his country in Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes and Normandy during World War II. When John returned from the war he worked at Iowa Manufacturing as a welder. After his marriage to Esther, they purchased a farm near Prairieburg, where John and Esther farmed until retirement, moving to Monticello in 1985.
John belonged to American Legion Arthur P. O'Rourke Post 209 American Legion and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed farming, reading, listening to the radio, playing the accordion and violin and helping his many neighbors with welding repairs.
Survivors include John's wife, Esther; two sons, Donald (LaRae) Reichenauer of Monticello and Mark (Jill) Reichenauer of Corning; daughter, Lois (Dave) Cavanaugh of Ionia; 11 grandchildren, Jody, Andrew, Sara, Joseph, Jacob and Kenneth Reichenauer, Kristen (Brian) Jerome, Kyle (Torrey) Cavanaugh, Lori (David) Schmitz and Tyler and Shelby Evans; and a sister, Helen Reichenauer of Cleveland, Ohio.
John was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Peter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
