Sixteen school districts in Iowa will receive $532.000 replace aging diesel school buses, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.
The Iowa districts receiving the federal funds for 28 buses are West Liberty, Sigourney, Pekin, Fairfield, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, New Hampton, Independence, Turkey Valley, West Hancock, Clear Lake, Bondurant-Farrar, Atlantic, Greene County, Humboldt, Sioux City and AHSTW (Avoca).
The money will be used to replace or retrofit diesel buses, thereby reducing pollutants linked to asthma and lung damage, the EPA said in announcing $8.7 million in grants to districts in 32 states.
It costs about $20,000 to replace one school bus.
