John R. Cox, 59, of Lisbon, passed away after complications from heart failure on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Danny Cary. Family will greet friends from 2 p.m. until service time. Burial: Abingdon Cemetery in Jefferson County at a later date.
Survivors include his siblings, Dale (Eunice) Cox of Swedesburg and David (Brenda) Cox of Ollie, Iowa; brother-in-law, Richard Dickinson of Pella; six nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Dickinson.
John was born March 1, 1955, in Ottumwa, Iowa, son of Richard and Marian (Jones) Cox. He graduated from Pekin Community High School and then went on to receive his bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education. John was a teacher for 28 years and for the last 16 years, he taught at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. He valued working with the youth at Four Oaks in Bertram, was an avid Iowa State Fair camper, and also enjoyed rescuing dogs. John was a member of the Iowa State Education Association.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the American Heart Association or Cedar Valley Humane Society.
