Eugene Harold Opperman, 95, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at Pinicon Place in Anamosa. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, located at 915 27th St. in Marion. Funeral services will begin
at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, conducted by Timothy Bickel, followed with military honors. Committal services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Guttenberg City Cemetery in Guttenberg, conducted by Pastor Gregory Williamson.
Eugene was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Strawberry Point, Iowa, the son of Edgar and Bessie (Palmer) Opperman. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School, Wartburg College and the University of Iowa, with his master's in secondary education. Eugene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In Guttenberg on Dec. 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Biederman. Eugene was employed as a guidance counselor at Thornridge High School in Dolton, Ill., from 1959 to 1985. He also was in charge of its summer school and night school programs. Eugene resided in South Holland, Ill., for more than 40 years before moving back to Iowa in 2005.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty of Marion; one son, David Opperman of Marion; and one brother, Ivan (Marilyn) Opperman of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Roger Opperman; and three brothers.
