Ehrhardt, Sister Jane RSM
Sister Jane Ehrhardt RSM, 82, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Mercy Hallmar Care Center in Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Sacred Heart Convent Chapel in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Joe Hauer. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Convent, with a wake service at 7 p.m. Arrangements are with Teahen Funeral Home.
Sister Jane was born in Elkader, Iowa, on Nov. 27, 1928, the daughter of Carl and Marie Roach Ehrhardt. She attended St. Joseph School and Elkader Junior College, both in Elkader, before entering the Sisters of Mercy in Cedar Rapids, on Aug. 1, 1947. She made her final vows as a Sister of Mercy on Feb. 2, 1953. Sister Jane received a bachelor's degree in English from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, and did additional course work at St. Mary's College in Omaha, Neb., and the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
Sister Jane spent most of her ministry as an elementary schoolteacher at Immaculate Conception, Charles City; Immaculate Conception, Elma; St. Patrick, Fairfax; St. Cecilia, Ames; All Saints, Cedar Rapids; Sacred Heart, Waterloo; Our Lady of Grace in Edina, Minn.; Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids; and St. Joseph, Marion. After over 40 years as an elementary schoolteacher, Sister Jane became a librarian at St. Joseph School in Marion, and continued her commitment to the school after her retirement as a volunteer until 2004. Sister Jane retired to Sacred Heart Convent in Cedar Rapids, and volunteered as the convent's receptionist until recent months when she became ill. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Sister Jane was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law, Calvin Williams and Eugene Sandor.
In addition to the Sisters of Mercy she is survived by her three sisters, Mary (Gerald) Mulroney of Overland Park, Kan., Eileen Williams of Dallas, Texas, and LaVonne Sandor of Marietta, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.
