Thompson, Marie A.

Marie A. Thompson, 74, of New Bern, N.C., went to be with her Lord Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Bern, with the Rev. Scott Gleason officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

She was born May 26, 1936, in Craven County to the late Edgar McDonald and Elsie (Laughinghouse) Alligood. She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and had served as leader of the Christian Women's Club. She was past president of “His Women,” a Christian organization in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Marie was a facilitator for the Alzheimer's organization in New Bern. She worked for various banks and doctors during her lifetime.

She was a devoted wife and mother, and especially loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed meeting people and never met a stranger. Marie was an avid quilter and loved sewing.

She is survived by her husband, Fred K. Thompson; two daughters, Lisa J. Giesler and husband Jerry of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Karen M. Bartlett and husband Troy of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Pat Groft of Gettysburg, Pa., and Sue Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Tanner Bell, Max Giesler, Gavin Bartlett and Rylie Bartlett.
