A. Ruth Perkins, 86, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at Legacy Ridge on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, at First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Ave., in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at the Memory Gardens mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Ruth was born on March 17, 1929, in Nevada, Iowa, the daughter of Amos and Stella (Sampson) Anderson. She was raised in Nevada, attended Waldorf College and later graduated with a degree in nursing from the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Ruth worked for the Army Hospital at Fort Meade and the Iowa Lutheran Hospital. On Oct. 8, 1950, Ruth married Jack Perkins in Nevada. From 1953 to 1986, Ruth and Jack owned and operated Barbara's Bake Shop in Iowa City.
Ruth was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City and a member of 4-H. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, cooking, refinishing antique furniture, traveling and golfing various courses with her husband, Jack.
Survivors include her husband, Jack, of Iowa City; their daughter, Cynthia Mills (Stephen) of Watertown, Minn.; a sister, Mary Jean Mueller (Ernst) of Red Wing, Minn.; two grandsons, Brian and David Mills; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Marley and Allen Anderson; and a sister, Josephine Heintz.
Ruth's family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff at Iowa City Hospice for the compassionate care which they provided.
