Jul. 19, 2016 5:16 pm
VINTON - An American Red Cross shelter, set up in the aftermath of a tornado that touched down early Sunday in Vinton, is closing.
The shelter, inside Vinton-Shellsburg High School, is to close at noon Wednesday.
The shelter opened Sunday after an EF-2 tornado hit, damaging buildings in town.
Peter Teahen, a spokesman for the Red Cross, said even though the shelter is closing, Red Cross caseworkers are to be available to meet with families at the high school from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
The high school is located at 210 W. 21st St.
Debris is piled by the road in Walford on Monday, July 18, 2016, two days after a storm system produced strong winds and a tornado in Vinton. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
